Children continue to die at an alarming rate in the developing world - more than 25,000 every day. That's 17 children every minute, a total of 9 million every year.
They succumb to five great killers:
- Acute respiratory infections (pneumonia)
- Diarrheal diseases (cholera, typhoid, dysentery)
- Malaria
- Infectious and parasitic diseases (measles, whooping cough, TB, worms)
- HIV/AIDS
Extreme poverty and hunger exacerbate all these silent killers in an ongoing catastrophe that rarely manages to hold the attention of the developed world for long. And the great tragedy is that all of these diseases are very treatable.
The One5 Foundation -- One Child, One World, Five Killers - is doing something about it. Our mission is to provide impoverished communities with the capacity to begin meeting their own basic needs - health care, housing, education, nutrition and economic development.
We work with other organizations in a broad philanthropic effort that seeks a holistic solution where societies can work their way out of extreme poverty. Our focus is on nutrition, clean water and sanitation, disease prevention, immunizations, treatment and education.
Our purpose is to build hope on a foundation of health - one child at a time.
