Need:
World wide more that 100 million children do not attend school or - in contrast to the situation of youth in industrialized countries - remain in school for only a short time during their lives.
Poor health, child labor, school fees and additional costs for uniforms and supplies, family duties and a lack of schools or teachers are all contributing factors.
Solution:
Providing schools, teachers and books, along with a traditional 'western' curriculum may be a part of the answer. But basic health education and hygiene, more effective agricultural techniques, vocational training, leadership and business training also have to be incorporated into the solution.
By having an overall strategy that addresses all the contributing factors, as well as specific strategies to provide educational opportunities that are appropriate for the specific individuals and communities and their stage of development, we hope to end the cycle of extreme poverty.
