HIV/AIDS

Purpose

Haiti has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the western hemisphere and of any country outside of sub-Saharan Africa. Children often bear the greatest burden of this disease due to the lack of medical infrastructure capable of providing resources to adequately diagnose and treat those infected. Because of the high risk of death before the age of two among HIV-infected children, early infant testing and diagnoses is essential to insure proper care.

About the Project

One5 Foundation, in collaboration with several non-governmental organizations, is supporting Early-Infant Diagnosis programs in Haiti by providing technical assistance and HIV DNA PCR testing for infants in several sites strategically located nationwide. We are implementing a robust system of tracking the positively identified infants to support the integration of pediatric antiretroviral therapy programs in these sites. The ability to provide these valuable resources is a major step in laying the foundation to properly care for infants exposed to HIV in Haiti.
